Some curious Web surfer searched for “big john’s beans and fixin’s” and came across ye olde blog. And I cripes, have to admit I’m quite embarrassed.
Check out this image from June 2005 (and ignore my old URL):

BLAAAARRGH! I ATE THE PROM!!
Ahem. I’m pleased to say that’s nowhere near I am today as is evident by this photo, even though it was taken about 5 lbs. ago:

My sincerest apologies to those who may have found the first image offensive. Meh, I’m sure the second one is too, so I’m sorry for that one as well.
And I promise an updated progress photo is coming soon. In fact, I’ll even hold up a pair of my Fat Guy Pants for comparison purposes!
(Note: I just checked my previous entry. I really need to stop saying that and just make with the picture already, huh?)

Weekly Weigh-In #19

Ah, Week #19. Here we go.
- Weekly Weigh-In #19: 212.7 lbs.
- Last week’s weight: 214.4 lbs.
- Gain/loss of: -1.7 lbs.
- Weekly average lost: 2.1 lbs.
- Weight loss to date: 84.3 lbs.
First off, and I hate to add what seems like such meaningless and futile text, I came across yet another so-called weight loss blog using one of my posts. If this were my personal blog then I wouldn’t care, but since I’m losing weight the right way, I take offense to sites that use my posts to push weight loss pills. As such, from this point on I will include the text you see above in each post here on 200by40.
Now that that’s out of the way…
This week sees a loss of almost 2 lbs., which is about my doctors’ recommended average per week. Anything more than that is definitely a bonus so I’m happy with the results. But truth be told, I was 212.5 lbs. a few days ago, just before my aunt’s big 84th birthday celebration where I ate quite a bit. I’m not concerned; this was a once-in-a-lifetime thing so I took advantage of it. Not only that, she’s got a pool so I was able to work some of that food off very easily. It’s back to the program today as it always is after a heavy weekend.
If you’ve been following my Weekly Weigh-Ins since the very beginning, you’ve seen some changes. With last week’s weigh-in numbers, I started to include my total weight lost. This gives me and everybody else out there an easier way to keep track of things…just in case you can’t see that little Traineo icon on the right…
One of the stats I’ve since dropped has been the “If I Lose…” stat since, well, I began to feel it was screwing my progress up. In the beginning I was losing somewhere near 3 lbs. a week average so including that stat was fun as it gave me an idea on when I would reach my goal.
Today, July 29, is when I should have reached my goal based on my then-average weight loss in pounds per week. But here I sit with less than 13 lbs. to go instead. Oh well; the plan was to be there by my 40th birthday which I will no doubt achieve.
This week’s Milestone: size 38 pants! That’s right, guys, I’ve officially dropped 10 sizes the right way. If this isn’t proof that one doesn’t need pills or surgery in order to achieve their weight loss goal, then I don’t know what is (*thumbs nose at lap-banders everywhere*).
On the exercise front, Wii Fit continues to whip me into shape! Here are the latest results, taken after today’s Body Test:
I was about 233 lbs. when I started in May. I’m now on my 66th day and at this point the bar graph can’t be seen in its entirety, so I had to zoom out and show it this way. Even so, you can see how much progress I’ve made.
And I promise a new Progress Photo is coming. Ann took one of me at the party but I was holding my cousin’s one-month-old son (which really made me want another
) and you can’t really get an idea of what I’ve achieved. But I did get that wonderful new baby smell all over me.
That’s it for today. More news as it happens. See ya, and stay focused!

Cool Weight Loss Apps
2008/07/27 at 9:27 pm | Posted in Health, Life, weight loss, weight watchers, wii fit | Comments OffTags: apps, diets don't work, iphone, ipod touch, weight loss, weight loss apps, weight loss blog, weight watchers, wii fit
Hey, it’s me. And I know I haven’t bee posting lately but honestly, I haven’t had a lot to say as my quest begins to enter the final stages (less than 15 lbs.) But I am rapidly approaching a Milestone that, when reached, I’ll post right here. It won’t be the most monumental one but it’s something I will genuinely proud of.
Oh, one thing of note. I went through the closet tonight and gathered up even more of my old Fat Guy Pants (and shirts) for disposal at a local collection site. I tried them on just to be sure I’ve lost what I think I have and no, there’s no doubting it anymore. They were HUGE and I’ll be glad to toss them into the black abyss of the collection dumpster!
Anyway, moving along here…
Since purchasing my iPod Touch, I’ve been nosing around iTunes to see which cool (and free) weight loss apps might be worth downloading.
I found some I’d like to share with you all. Keep in mind that these apps seem to be designed with the iPhone in mind as their very functionality insinuates that you will be out and about in order to make the most of them. And since (I would think) there’s a better likelihood that you would have an iPhone instead of an iPod Touch while at the grocery store or restaurant, well, there you go.
The first is the PointsCalc, a nifty little tool that allows you to enter calories, fat, and fiber in order to determine the Weight Watchers Points value of foods you may be considering. When you’re finished, simply shake your device to erase the numbers. About the only limitation is that meals with 1,000 calories or more cannot be determined, but there’s a good chance that you wouldn’t want to know anyhow.
The Restaurant Nutrition app gives you the nutritional information for 20 fast food restaurants and, if you’re really desperate to eat, you can click on the Map button and see exactly where your nearest fat…um, fast food place is located. It’s definitely handy in a pinch, but if you’re near a WiFi connection, visit Dottie’s Weight Loss Zone for a more comprehensive list.
Weight Tracker is just as its name implies. You enter your daily weight and it will keep track of your progress. You can set your starting weight, starting date and end date, and the app will keep track of your total weight lost, weight loss by day, and days remaining. All in all this one is very handy but, and this may just be me, I’d prefer if the numbers could be broken down into tenths. Instead, you have to round up (212.5 becomes 213) and that’s a real let-down. Sorry, but if you’re trying to lose weight, every little bit should count.
The fourth and final app has nothing to do with weight loss but I think it’s worth mentioning. The Pandora app connects you with the Pandora Web site where music will be streamed directly to your iPhone or iPod Touch via WiFi. You create a channel based on your music preference–one of mine is the Depeche Mode Channel–and you will hear music from the channel’s namesake as well as other related artists. I’ve been listening to my channels while jogging the Island Lap on Wii Fit and it’s worked out well.
All of these apps are free on iTunes. Check them out and see what you think!

Weekly Weigh-In #18

Original content from 200by40 posted on July 22, 2008.
Week #18 is here! How did it go?
- Weekly Weigh-In #18: 214.4 lbs.
- Last week’s weight: 217.3 lbs.
- Gain/loss of: -2.9 lbs.
- Weekly average lost: 2.3 lbs.
- Weight loss to date: 82.7 lbs.
Hey hey, look at that. A drop of 3 lbs. definitely beats that gain of .9 lbs. from last week. Now if I had only lost some pounds that week, I’d be in pretty good shape.
But this blog isn’t about what could have been, now is it? It’s about accepting your responsibilities and moving on to the next thing. So that’s what I’m doing–accepting the previous week and working toward a better one this week. Simple as that.
I had some pretty good exercise on Saturday when the family loaded up the car and drove to the L.A. Zoo. We’re Members so we can go whenever we feel, just as we do with the Aquarium of the Pacific. If you’ve never been to the L.A. Zoo, it’s up in Griffith Park and the terrain is very hilly, so it’s great for a day of walking.
And that’s just what we did. Knowing we’d be trudging along all day, I ate a Freschetta personal pizza for lunch which, for all intents and purposes, was outstanding. It’s probably one of the best brands out there. It filled me up enough to practically not want to eat dinner but I did anyway, just not a lot.
Oh, and as a way to reward myself on my progress, I bought my iPod Touch. You can read more about it at my personal blog, HolographicMeatloaf.com. I guess this means I can remove it from my Amazon Wish List…even if it’s 8GB not 32GB…hint hint…
On to other things. Ann told me about a cool new place called Yogurtland so we went there last night. While I don’t have any nutritional information on the place, frozen yogurt generally is less in everything than traditional ice cream, so right away there’s a plus. Basically, you walk in, grab a cup (there are three sizes), fill it as much or as little as you wish, add as many topping as you wish, and then pay .30 cents per ounce.
Our total was just under $10 for three cups with toppings. That’s just a few bucks more than three single scoops at Baskin Robbins sans toppings, so I’d say it was definitely worth the trip and money.
The funny thing about all this? It’s next door to a Dairy Queen, which was totally empty.
Watch out, Golden Spoon and 31 Flavors. You might be next!
That’s it for now. Make it a great week and stay focused!

Sacrifice

My last version of “Today’s Tip” dealt with the importance of physical activity and exercise which are absolutely essential when it comes to weight loss.
Today I’d like to touch upon another important aspect: sacrifice.
Losing weight the proper way—no surgeries or pills—absolutely demands sacrificing something. Well, you shouldn’t really look at it as being a sacrifice but more of a trade-off since the results will definitely be worth the effort.
What have I sacrificed, cut back on or given up altogether? Let’s see.
